Born with an extremely rare congenital disorder called craniofacial duplication (diprosopus), in which part of the face is duplicated on the head, this month-old baby has been the center of attraction in her Saini village in Noida, some 55 km (34 miles) from New Delhi.

Her family of the baby has refused special medical treatment, believing she is the incarnation of a Hindu goddess. In fact, hundreds of people have flocked to the family’s dilapidated brick house to “worship” her and seek blessings.

Reports said she ate with both mouths and blinked all four eyes.

Cases of sex abuse by Roman Catholic priests have overshadowed the Pope’s visit in the US.

WASHINGTON — Pope Benedict XVI told America’s Roman Catholic leaders Wednesday evening that the clergy sex abuse scandal has sometimes been “very badly handled,” his harshest criticism yet regarding the crisis that has badly damaged the U.S. church.

Benedict’s remarks came at a prayer service with hundreds of American bishops at a national shrine in Washington, and marked the second time the pope has addressed sex abuse on his first papal journey to the U.S.

On his flight from Rome, the pope said he was deeply ashamed of the scandal and would fight to keep pedophiles out of the priesthood.

Move over, problogger. Make way for the pro-debtblogger.

The emergence of the Brian Gorrell blog has extended the possibilities of blogging, from mere self-expression to making money online and now — debt-collection.

Brian Gorrell has inspired abandoned children, neglected mistresses, spurned lovers, estranged spouses to now consider the possibility of blogging to collect debts, whether monetary or moral.

Abandoned by your father? Then make a blog and ask for child support. Your sugardaddy stopped giving you money? Blog about your life as a mistress and shame him.

This kind of blogging now presents a new situation for bloghosting services such as Google’s Blogger (Blogspot) which at this moment is being pressured to shut down the blog (as Mr. Gorrell himself said). How do you balance the freedom of speech and expression on the Internet with the individual right to privacy, not to mention laws on libel and defamation?

Blogger (Blogspot) has hand-off policy concerning content that people put on their blogs. Quoting their terms of service:

Much of the content of Blogger.com and Blogspot.com — including the contents of specific postings — is provided by and is the responsibility of the person or people who made such postings. Google does not monitor the content of Blogger.com and Blogspot.com, and takes no responsibility for such content. Instead, Google merely provides access to such content as a service to you.

This would be Blogger’s standard reply to anybody asking to remove a certain blog post or an entire blog on Blogspot. Blogger would also tell any complainant to instead contact the person about the content he posted, which is like saying: Good luck.

Further:

By their very nature, Blogger.com and Blogspot.com may carry offensive, harmful, inaccurate or otherwise inappropriate material, or in some cases, postings that have been mislabeled or are otherwise deceptive. We expect that you will use caution and common sense and exercise proper judgment when using Blogger.com and Blogspot.com.

Google does not endorse, support, represent or guarantee the truthfulness, accuracy, or reliability of any communications posted via the Service or endorse any opinions expressed via the Service. You acknowledge that any reliance on material posted via the Service will be at your own risk.

At this stage, for Google to remove the Brian Gorrell blog on the basis of its content or Gorrell’s motivations would be a big slap on the face of freedom of speech, and will erode the public’s confidence on Blogger as a reliable venue of self-expression. It would in fact be a big slap on blogging itself.

They work long hours, often to exhaustion. Many are paid by the piece — not garments, but blog posts. This is the digital-era sweatshop. You may know it by a different name: home.

A growing work force of home-office laborers and entrepreneurs, armed with computers and smartphones and wired to the hilt, are toiling under great physical and emotional stress created by the around-the-clock Internet economy that demands a constant stream of news and comment.

…. It is unclear how many people blog for pay, but there are surely several thousand and maybe even tens of thousands…

…. the evolution of the “pay-per-click” economy has put the emphasis on reader traffic and financial return, not journalism.

Blogging as a profession puts severe stress on the problogger because there is no such thing as deadline — any hour, any minute is “posting time”. Unlike the newspaper journalists, “pay-per-click” bloggers are in constant pressure to be updated and to be ready to post anytime of the day.

But for the New York Times to blame these deaths on blogging is a little bit stretching the truth. It is called “sensationalism.”

Nine-year-olds at a school in the U.S. state of Georgia brought a broken steak knife, handcuffs and electrical tape to school in a plot to injure their teacher, authorities said on Tuesday.

Teachers at Center Elementary School in Waycross, Georgia, uncovered the plot on Friday when a pupil reported that a child in the third grade had brought a weapon into the school.

“The plan was to handcuff the teacher, put tape over her mouth and hit her over the head with the paperweight and possibly cut her,” said Lt. Duane Caswell of Waycross police, adding that some students said the knife was simply there to cut the tape.

“It was a rather elaborate scheme for children of that age,” he said.
