Philippines: Tarzan seeks higher pay for judges

According to a press release, Rep. Carmelo “Tarzan” F. Lazatin (1st District, Pampanga, Lakas-CMD) has filed a bill seeking to “augment the salaries of the members of the judiciary to provide them appreciable compensation for keeping the justice system fair to all.”

House Bill No. 3562 was titled “Increased Salary of Judiciary Members.”

The press release:

A lawmaker has filed a bill seeking to augment the salaries of the members of the judiciary to provide them appreciable compensation for keeping the justice system fair to all.

House Bill No. 3562 authored by Rep. Carmelo F. Lazatin (1st District, Pampanga, Lakas-CMD), however, seeks the increase to offset the current law exempting the members of the judiciary from allowances and other benefits from the local government units.

“The gratuity provided is not commensurate with the valuable service rendered by the Justices of the Supreme Court, Court of Appeals and other members of the Judiciary,” Lazatin said.

“Despite the current law that provides for benefits for the members of the judiciary, they are unresponsive to the rapidly changing economic condition of the country,” Lazatin added.

According to Lazatin, the bill dubbed “Increased Salary of Judiciary Members” aims to ensure that members of the Judiciary are remunerated accordingly and provided with other means of job satisfaction and fulfillment for the efficient delivery of services for the benefit of every Filipino.

“The country’s justices are considered as the vanguard and protector of our Constitution. The role they play in upholding justice and order in our society is indeed indispensable,” Lazatin said.

Lazatin said it is time for the State to do its best to protect its protectors and provide a better living condition for them.

“With the provision of increased salary, the State contributes in empowering the country’s justices and encourage much efficient job performance and dedication to public service for the benefit of all,” Lazatin said.
