In Mississippi, a plumber has been awarded more than $1.1 million in damages by a jury after suing a millionaire businessman who stole his wife.
The plumber, Johnny Valentine, filed a case of ‘alienation of affection’ against Jerry Fitch Sr., for having an affair with his wife, Sandra. Valentine’s wife had an affair with Fitch within a year after being hired by Fitch’s real-estate company. She became pregnant, and in 2002 she married her boss and left Valentine.
Although Valentine’s wife ex-wife, now Mrs. Fitch, denied then that she was having an adulterous affair with her boss, genetic tests done showing he was not the baby’s father. She later told the court she began her affair with Fitch because she was unhappy in the marriage.
Valentine filed for divorce and then sued Fitch. The Mississipi Supreme Court upheld the verdict, saying the purpose of the suit was ‘the protection of the love, society, companionship, and comfort that form the foundation of a marriage’.
Mississippi is one of only seven states in the US that still allow people to sue those who “stole” their wife or husband.
