Bloggers told: See psychiatrist to check internet addiction

Bloggers have been advised to have themselves checked by a psychiatrist for internet addiction, which an Israeli doctor said was more serious than Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Most bloggers –particularly the so-called pro-bloggers — are known to spend hours and hours on the internet, often skipping meals, getting late for work (if they have a job) or school or begging off from social or family activities just to be online and “keep along” their blogging communities.

Even when offline, some bloggers think of nothing but their blogs and are preoccupied with thinking about topics they will post on their blogs. Often, they suffer from anxiety attack and paranoia — thinking they have missed out something when they don’t go online and check on other people’s blogs.

Compulsive behavior includes checking traffic stats, checking Adsense revenues, checking blog comments, trackbacks, replies to their comments on other blogs, posting comments on other blogs for a linkback; Google search results for their top keywords and checking what other people are saying about their blog; and installing an array of plugins and widgets.

Dr. Pinhas Dannon of Tel Aviv University’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine said  “Internet addiction disorder” can lead to anxiety and severe depression, according to an news article in PhysOrg.

Dannon said:

“Internet addiction is not manifesting itself as an ‘urge.’ It’s more than that. It’s a deep ‘craving.’ And if we don’t make the change in the way we classify Internet addiction, we won’t be able to treat it in the proper way.”
