The Philippine government has ordered its military to suspend its military operations againt secessionist Moslem rebels in the South, after the international community warned of the dire consequences of an escalated armed conflict.
Japan and Canada threatened to suspend aid to Mindanao if the fighting escalates.
The World Bank warned that that an escalation of hostilities ‘would threaten the chances of achieving a peaceful resolution to this crisis or - much worse - totally derail the ongoing peace process.”
More than 2,000 Philipine troops have been positioned in Basilan for a major offensive against the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, following the killing of 14 Marines in an ambush last July 10.
At least 10 of the slain Philippine Marines were beheaded and mutilated.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo ordered a three-day suspension of military operations against the MILF due to international pressure not to escalate hostilities in light of the ongoing peace process.

These peace negotiations are mostly about how large a bribe the MILF and southern politicians will get to stop fighting. The government will not openly admit that, and is trying to get things built in the south that help the general population, and cannot be stolen by corrupt local officials. This corruption down south is what wrecked previous peace deals. The government pours money into the Moslem south, local leaders steal most of it, and then another rebellion starts because of the continuing poverty.
Japan is the major donor to the Philippines, and has poured nearly a billion dollars a year into the Moslem south over the last decade. Japan wants the government to play down the deaths of the 14 marines (who were looking for an Italian priest kidnapped by Islamic terrorists allied with the MILF). But the government will have a major morale problem with some of their most effective military units (the marines), if the killers are not caught and brought to justice. The MILF knows who the killers are, but refuses to help bring them in. This is largely because the MILF is split into factions, some of whom back continued kidnapping and terrorism.

yung mga general at kung sino sino pang matataas na tao sa AFP ang dapat ipadala dyan sa mindanao at hindi yung mga ordinaryong sundalo lang . .kukuya-kuyakoy lang yang mga yan sa mga mala-mansyon nilang bahay at papasyal pasyal lang sa mga malls. .mga tarantado kayong mga general kyo!
