A new peanut variety was released by the National Seed Industry (NSIC) on February 21.
NSIC Pn-13, popularly named as UPL Pn-16 or Biyaya 16, is the eighth of the Biyaya series of peanut varieties developed by the Institute of Plant Breeding, UPLB. The first seven varieties were released between 1976 and 1999.
Biyaya 16 is a pureline developed from a crossline, CES 101, a Spanish type variety, and Biyaya 4, a Valencia-type variety. The cross was intended to improve the yield and improve disease resistance of the Spanish parent.
Biyaya 16 can be grown in both wet and dry seasons. Based on 23 trials of the National Cooperative Testing, its average pod yield ranged from 2.35 tons/ha during the wet season to 2.54 tons/ha during the dry season. The average seed yield ranged from 1.67 tons/ha during the wet season to 1.88 tons/ha during the dry season. Seed size, as expressed in grams per 100 seeds, ranged from 52 during wet season to 56 during the dry season. It can be harvested an average of 98 days after emergence.
The two-seeded Biyaya 16 has moderate resistance to peanut rust and late Cercospora leaf spot, the two major foliar diseases of peanut.
Its seeds are pink, uniform in size, and of acceptable shape. It is suitable for both processing and table consumption. Protein content is 27%, fat content is 48% and carbohydrate content is 25%.
The principal breeders of this peanut variety are Dr. Remedios M. Abilay and Dr. Maria H. Magpantay. They were assisted by Ms. Yolanda L. Dizon and Ms. Lourdes O. Angeles.
