This one is for the books, even for the World Records.
Instead of fighting the fire that razed the Post Office branch in Pasay City, some firemen/firefighters on the scene looted and opened packages that contained goodies from abroad.
A surveillance video captured the looting by some firemen while their peers were busy fighting the blaze that engulfed the Philippine Postal and Customs Office at the Delta Gate of the Domestic Airport in Pasay City at around 11 p.m. the other night.
The video was aired on TV.
While the city’s fire marshall ordered an investigation, he defended his men, saying not all those who responded to the fire came from his department as some of them were from volunteer brigades.
He also denied claims by postal employees that the firemen came half an hour late.
Analysis:
While indeed not all men in firefighters uniforms are from the city’s fire department, any action by uniformed firefighters on the scene would reflect on the city fire department.
Recommendation:
The city fire department must take responsibility for actions taken by firefighters on the scene. Volunteer fire brigades should be under the jurisdiction of the city fire department. The government must look at raising wages for firemen to prevent looting.
Conclusion:
While the fire department may have some liability for the looting, even some postal employees are guilty of opening packages and letters from abroad, hoping to find dollars, yens and dinars tucked in greeting cards and shoe boxes.

Raise wages to prevent looting? That’s hopeless. It is in most filipinos genes to steal and try and get away with anything they can get away with. Give them 50k a month and I bet they’d still steal. It runs in the blood nothing you can do about it.
