Court decision: Imelda Marcos not guilty of tax evasion

Former First Lady Imelda Marcos, 78, has been acquitted of tax evasion charges last Wednesday, only because she did not receive any tax notices while in exile.

Manila Trial Court Judge Rosal Samson Tatad  blamed the government prosecutors for bungling the case.

“The prosecution’s scanty evidence failed to establish the element of criminal intent on the part of Mrs Marcos in all the criminal complaints filed against her,” the judge ruled.

Marcos, 78, was been charged with failing to pay 33.734 million pesos  in income tax in 1985 and 5.7 million pesos in estate tax after her husband, deposed dictator Ferdinand Marcos, died in 1989.

The court agreed with Ms Marcos’ argument that she and her family had already fled into exile in Hawaii in 1986 and therefore did not receive any tax notices demanding her to pay taxes.

BUNGLING - unskilled, clumsy, inept, inexperienced, untrained, amateurish, unprofessional, ham-fisted

SCANTY - very little, insufficient, sparse, scarce, measly, inadequate, meager.

In short, natutulog sa pansitan ang mga prosecutors…

she was acquitted in the tax evasion charges. Does this mean that the govt cannot collect the 39.434 million pesos anymore?
