World boxing champion Manny Pacquiao faces a knockout in the congressional elections in his hometown province in the Philippines, as unofficial election tally shows incumbent congresswoman Darlene Antonino-Custodio leading by a wide margin.
It was not only a battle of beauty versus brawn, but also of Pacquiao’s star power against the Antonino family’s political clout in the provincial district.
The Macapagal administration had hoped to exploit Pacquiao’s international popularity and national sports hero status to defeat the Antonino political dynasty, which has been a stalwart of the political opposition in the area.
