Blame it on Christmas decors — and firecrackers.
Twenty-three Christmas shoppers were killed, including a pregnant woman and two babies, when a fire swept through a packed store in the Ormoc City in central Philippines.
Investigators said the fire started when firecrackers that were displayed near the Christmas decorations suddenly ignited. The store was not authorized to sell firecrackers, which were traditionally used to welcome the New Year.
All 23 bodies were recovered inside the store’s toilet, where apparently the victims sought refuge in panic, not thinking that it was a death trap.
